Britain ethnic minority population is nearing 14%. There has been a steady rise in how ethnic minorities are represented in public life at around 8% in parliament. There is still a long way to go, but things are looking up, even with the backdrop of Brexit.

The new PM has been ruthless and radical. Not only has he overhauled the previous cabinet but introduced the most diverse cabinet ever. It is an irony that at the time of Brexit and fears of immigration grabbing the headlines, the PM introduces a record number of ethnic minorities in the frontline of politics. There are now 11 ethnic minorities in government posts which is more than the four previous prime ministers combined.

In the cabinet itself, 4 full cabinet ministers have been appointed and two other Ministers who will attend Cabinet. This accounts for 17% of the cabinet and a new record.

Two of the top jobs have gone to ethnic minorities. Priti Patel MP is the new Home Secretary and Sajid Javed MP is the new Chancellor of Exchequer. Alok Sharma MP has been promoted to International Development Secretary and Rishi Sunak MP who help run Boris Johnson’s campaign is the new Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

Other notable BAME additions include: Kwasi Kwarteng MP, Minister of State in the Department of Business; Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, Minister for State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office; Nusrat Ghani MP as Government Whip and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Department of Transport and James Cleverly MP, Minister without Portfolio and Conservative Party Chair
